According to the anonymous Apple employees who spoke BloombergApple is “secretly” developing an artificial intelligence chatbot, ‘Apple GPT’, to compete with big tech companies that develop large language models (LLM) and generative AI tools.
The AI chat rumor could lead to conversational AI capabilities built right into iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS, accessible with your Apple ID, without downloading a third-party app.
“Apple GPT” and “Ajax”
Apple has created an AI framework called “Ajax” as the backbone of its generative AI chat.
Using “Ajax”, Apple engineers have created the internal chatbot that some call “Apple GPT”, similar to the popular OpenAI technology, although details remain scarce.
Apple’s move into generative AI chatbots comes as companies like Meta and Google are scrambling to launch new AI advances months after being caught off guard by the buzz and capabilities of ChatGPT and other OpenAI products.
Training data sources
Although not definitively stated, Apple’s privacy policy for Siri and Dictation suggests the company may use data such as transcripts of Siri interactions to train and improve the AI models that power Siri, Dictation and related services.
The policy mentions using Siri data to “develop and improve” these features and retaining some transcripts beyond two years for the “continuous improvement of Siri.”
This could allow Apple to leverage the data to train AI models to respond more accurately to user requests.
However, the privacy policy does not unequivocally confirm the use of Siri data for AI training, only providing circumstantial evidence that it could occur.
Apple seems to be cautious about openly admitting this practice. However, it possesses a significant amount of technology that has access to a large amount of data.
Looking at ChatGPT closely
In an interview with Good Morning America earlier this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company is excited and looking closely at ChatGPT.
However, he expressed caution about the technology’s potential for bias and misinformation.
Competition for application developers and big technologies
If Apple successfully develops an AI chatbot, it could have major implications for existing AI chatbots, especially those in the current App Store.
In the productivity category, 11 of the top 50 apps offer an AI chatbot.
This group of applications includes OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Poe with the latest version of Claude 2, and Perplexity with GPT-4.

This category does not include AI chatbots that can be accessed through a mobile browser or embedded in other applications offered by companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Snapchat.
It’s still unclear when or how Apple plans to roll out its chatbot technology to consumers. But Apple’s entry into the space intensifies an AI arms race that could substantially alter the way people interact with technology in the coming years.
