Atmos Energy recently announced that they were aware of an ongoing search phishing operation, where cybercriminals use search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to place a fake website in the top search results of a browser
The statement states that when clicked, these “fake” websites will redirect the user to an illegitimate Atmos Energy page with a fake customer service number and other fake information.
“If a customer calls the fake customer service number, they may be asked to provide login credentials or other sensitive information that fraudsters can use to compromise their bank, credit card or other accounts belonging to same customer,” public affairs director Kay. Coomes said in a statement.
Coomes added that phone scams are also on the rise, including one where imposters call customers directly and offer a discount on their Atmos Energy bill if they pay immediately over the phone.
Atmos Energy would like to reiterate that they never ask for payment with prepaid debit cards, gift cards, cryptocurrency, unauthorized third party fees or mobile apps.
“If you’re ever in doubt about the legitimacy of a call, just hang up and call Atmos Energy customer service at 888-286-6700,” Coomes said. “Payment of an Atmos Energy bill must be made through the Online Account Center or other authorized payment methods.”
Coomes said Atmos Energy provides multiple warnings and works to help customers with payment plans and support options before any service interruptions. Unless it is an emergency, Atmos Energy will not call customers before 7 am or after 6 pm central time.
“The most effective way to combat this recent increase in scam attempts is through education, awareness and extreme caution whenever someone contacts you about paying a utility bill,” he said. “In addition to online and phone scams, beware of imposters who demand payment at your door. Always ask for an employee ID badge, which shows the name, photo and logo of Atmos Energy”.
He added, “Our employees will not collect payments in person. If you suspect an impostor, please call our customer service number at 888.286.6700 to verify the employee’s identity and contact local authorities.”
