Google has taken the wraps off its AI-powered laptop, an initiative previously announced as Project Tailwind at this year’s Google I/O event.
The experimental product is now officially called NotebookLM. Google Labs is introducing it as a new approach to note-taking software, leveraging a robust language model at its heart.
The challenge of data overload

NotebookLM, an experimental product, harnesses the potential of language models together with user content to deliver fast and crucial information.
The tool functions as a virtual research assistant, capable of summarizing facts, elucidating complex ideas, and brainstorming new connections based on user-provided sources.

Unlike traditional AI chatbots, NotebookLM allows users to “melt” AI into their notes and sources. This source grounding feature adapts the AI to learn information relevant to the user.
Starting today, you can base NotebookLM on the Google Docs of your choice, with more formats coming soon.

Generate summaries: When you add a Google Doc to NotebookLM, it automatically formulates an overview, key topics and questions for a better understanding of the content.

To mitigate the risk of “hallucinations”, each AI answer is accompanied by source citations for easy fact-checking.
A collaborative and responsible development approach
Developed by a small team at Google Labs, NotebookLM is an experimental product that aims to use AI responsibly.
Regarding privacy, NotebookLM has access to the source material you choose to upload, and the dialogs with the AI are not visible to others. Also, the collected data is not used to train new AI models.
Google plans to collect frequent feedback to understand what’s working and where improvements are needed.
