Atmos Energy said in a press release Wednesday that online and phone scams have become more common, and recently Atmos Energy customers have been targeted.
Cybercriminals are using search engine optimization techniques to create fake websites, which will then appear at the top of a browser’s search results when key terms are used, according to the press release. There have been reports of users being directed to a fake Atmos Energy page that looks legitimate, but provides a fake customer service number and fake information.
Calling this fake phone number can lead to scammers asking for personal information, such as login credentials or other sensitive information that can be used to compromise other accounts or banking information.
Customers can also be told that they will receive a discount if they pay by phone. Atmos Energy said it will never ask for payment in the form of prepaid debit cards, gift cards, cryptocurrency or other unauthorized forms of payment.
Service interruptions will not occur unless Company has provided multiple notices and worked with Customer to make payment plans for outstanding balances. Atmos Energy will not call customers outside of regular business hours, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., unless there is an emergency, according to the news release.
“The most effective way to combat this recent increase in scam attempts is through education, awareness and extreme caution whenever someone contacts you about paying a utility bill” , said Kurtis Paradisa, public affairs manager for Atmos Energy. He also warned of scammers who demand payment on a customer’s doorstep.
“Always ask for an employee ID badge, which displays the Atmos Energy name, photograph and logo,” Paradisa said in the news release.
The press release also reminded customers to contact local law enforcement and Atmos Energy customer service at (888) 286-6700 if they feel threatened or suspect fraud.
