Open AI has disabled the Bing search feature it added to its ChatGPT AI service. “We’ve disabled the Bing Browsing Beta feature out of an abundance of caution while we fix it to make it right for content owners,” Open AI published.
Open AI said it is working to bring the feature back, but has had to disable the feature for now because this as reported allows access to paywalled content.
Browse with Bing. Open AI added Bing Search to ChatGPT as a premium service in May. In doing so, more up-to-date information and timely information powered by Bing Search has been added to ChatGPT. ChatGPT has a dataset from 2021 or older, which is why using Bing Chat provides a better experience for more timely questions. With Bing Search in ChatGPT, the service can “deliver more timely and up-to-date answers with access from the web,” the company wrote.
The service was for ChatGPT Plus subscribers.
Disabled on July 3rd. On July 3, 2023, Open AI disabled the Browse with Bing feature in ChatGPT. It was disabled “out of an abundance of caution,” the company wrote. “We are working to bring the beta back as soon as possible,” the AI company added.
Content gap with paywall. Last week, many noticed that ChatGPT’s Browse with Bing feature could access content behind a paywall. Here’s a tweet I saw then:

Microsoft’s Mikhail Parakhin responded to this Twitter, saying: “In Bing Chat we have a mechanism to prevent paywalled content from leaking into replies (if the publisher has set the ‘paywall’ flag).” “I will let OpenAI know that they should review it,” he said at the time. I assume that Microsoft Bing is working with the Open AI ChatGPT team to resolve the issue on Open AI’s part. I don’t think this affects Bing Chat.

Why we care The Browse with Bing feature in ChatGPT made the service even more useful for searchers and people with questions. It’s not clear when the feature will return, but I suspect it will be back soon.
