Search engine optimization is the key to appearing in searches. But did you know the key to not appearing in searches? Age verification.
It has been revealed via Twitter that sites that require age verification may not appear on Google Discover. Because? We’re not sure, but Google’s Danny Sullivan seems to be, and he said so in his tweet. He also stated that this news is not yet confirmed but it has been three days since his tweet but there has been no response.
To be fair, he wrote that he’s not sure and will find out, but it’s likely that age verification on sites won’t show up on Google Discover.
This was in response to a tweet from Lily Ray, where she broke down organic traffic from websites into three parts. He explained how traffic comes from news (6.33%), Google Discover (44.62%) and SEO (49.05%). He then went on to report that while Google says people can’t optimize content for Discover, a pattern always follows. If you follow it thoroughly, your site will surely get promoted there.
Upon discovering this pattern, he came up with this query. So he went on to ask if the age restriction has any effect on the sites that appear on Google Discover. It turns out it is. And so we have our answer from Danny.
This question was originally asked by JC, aimed at asking about limiting age restrictions related to searches. It was addressed to Lily, but since she didn’t know the answer, it was sent to Barry Adams. When he didn’t know either, he asked Danny.
As for us, we have browsed various sites through Google Discover. But until this query came up, we didn’t realize that we never saw the age restriction feature on the sites listed there. So we can conclude with evidence that the age restriction limits your reach.
