Google’s John Mueller addresses “silly” SEO questions on Reddit

John Mueller, a Google search advocate, recently participated in a candid discussion on the r/BigSEO subreddit, addressing questions about various SEO tactics and offering advice for aspiring digital marketers.

Mueller covered topics such as geotagging images, blogging frequency, and finding shortcuts to making money online.

In a thread titled “Incoming Stupid Question Bar,” a Reddit user asks the following questions:

We need to geotag images. Does Google care? Blogging. If we do, is it every day or once a week with seriously solid stuff? Google Business Profile Publishing: Every Day, Once a Week or Why Bother? Since things like Senuke died 10 years ago, is it about networking with webmasters of similar sites and the same niche to get links? Picking up #4, what about PBNs? are they back If so, does it have to be a bunch of completely legit looking websites versus some WP blogs combined?

Here’s a breakdown of Mueller’s lengthy response to the above questions.

Geotagging of images and block frequency

In response to a question about geotagging images, Mueller stated that it is not necessary for SEO purposes.

He also addressed the issue of blogging frequency, suggesting that content creators should prioritize unique and compelling content over maintaining a consistent posting schedule.

However, he acknowledged that regular posting could generate traffic and encouraged creators to revisit successful posts and expand their topics with higher quality content.

Mueller warned of the dangers of producing mediocre and “fluffy” content:

“The problem with trying to maintain a high frequency is that it’s easy to end up with mediocre, fluffy content, which search engine quality algorithms might pick up on, and then assume that the whole site is like that.

Taking risks like this in the beginning when it’s easy for you to start again is probably fine, doing it in the long run will be painful when you’re done. (All of this applies even more if you use shortcuts with gen-ai content).

Posting Google Business Profiles and Link Building

Mueller didn’t give specific advice on how often to post on your Google Business Profile, but he humorously answered questions about outdated link-building strategies like SENuke and Private Blog Networks (PBNs).

He warned that talk of such strategies could be taken out of context and used to promote questionable link building tools.

“SENuke, ha, that’s a name I haven’t heard in years, lol. Sorry. River. I have ideas about links, but people love to take things out of context to promote their linking efforts/tools, so maybe someone else will say something reasonable or not.

OMG, PBN too. What is this thread even. Now I won’t say anything without a lawyer present.”

Finding shortcuts to make money online

Mueller observed that the questions seemed to revolve around finding shortcuts to making money online.

He warned that many people are trying to do the same, and some even sell tools and courses that promise success but ultimately benefit the sellers more than their customers.

He further explained that the best tools are aimed at businesses that need to manage their online presence and are not meant for people looking for a quick path to riches.

Tips for aspiring SEO professionals

Mueller concluded by encouraging people aspiring to work in SEO to learn HTML, programming and other essential skills to better understand the industry.

“…learn HTML, learn some programming, and stick with it. 90% of the random tricks you come across won’t work, the remaining 9% will burn your sites to the ground, but if you’re lucky and persistent (it’s the same?), you will come across some things that work for you.

If you want to go this route, accept that most or all of the things you build will end up blowing up, but you might come across some along the way that are worth it.

And…after a while, you might realize that building something of lasting value can also be intriguing, and start working on a side project that does things the right way, where you can leverage your experience and avoid do the whole carving and burning/spamming site.”

Above all, he emphasizes that a successful web presence involves more than keywords and links. Mueller recommends experimenting and pushing the boundaries of traditional SEO strategies.
