YouTube has a new interface and not everyone is excited

After a major overhaul last year, it looks like YouTube may be embarking on another visual transformation, this time targeting the video page, which has remained relatively unchanged in recent years.

The change was noticed and posted on Twitter by @XenoPanther.

The new design. Currently, the web-based video page includes a video window accompanied by the title and other details/descriptions shown below. However, with the redesign witnessed by a select few in recent weeks, this information is now located to the right of the video and appears much more limited. Buttons for like, dislike, share and more are below, along with a selection of about five recent comments.

This creates an interface that closely resembles a mobile design. As a result, “Next” videos and additional recommendations no longer appear on the right edge of the screen. Instead, they are presented in a grid at the bottom, mirroring the look of the YouTube home page. Users can even find a “Latest YouTube Posts” section while scrolling.

While the experience of watching a video is largely unaffected, the relocation of comments and other details to the periphery constitutes a significant change to the interface. It’s clear that the main purpose of the redesign is to emphasize other videos for viewers to see, using much larger thumbnails. This makes for a more relaxed viewing experience, although whether the redesign strikes the right balance between information, feedback and recommendations remains to be seen.

Not everyone is thrilled. The the angriest comment it comes from u/Psyren1317, who replied “Holy hell this new design sucks”, before saying “Whoever designed this mess should be fired. Wow.”

Redditor u/DaGrumpyOne lived up to his username and replied “Now unusable.” While u/texaslegrefugee decried the change saying “The whole ‘library’ experience is absolutely terrible. It’s about as overdesigned as it gets, and nothing but confusing chaos. It takes forever to find anything.”

“I @YouTube The new video UI design is absolutely horrible. The massive thumbnails of other videos at the bottom of my screen are so distracting. Literally no one asked for this.”

Why we care Of course, any changes to the interface can potentially influence viewing time and user engagement, ideally in a positive way. Advertisers should be concerned about these changes because an improved viewing experience, which encourages users to spend more time on the platform, could increase ad impressions and increase the chances of their ads being seen by their target audience . Consequently, a well-balanced and engaging interface that seamlessly integrates information, feedback and recommendations can be advantageous for advertisers as it can increase their reach and impact on viewers.
