The SEO industry continued to thrive in 2022 despite constant changes and economic issues, according to a 54-page report published by online news and media publisher Search Engine Journal. The data revealed that not only did the industry see an influx of new professionals, but 58% also reported seeing higher ROI and bigger budgets.
The statistics come from the second annual edition of Search Engine Journal SEO Status Survey, which asked 3,623 freelance, agency and intern SEO professionals about their careers, budgets, priorities and the year ahead.
“More than half of agency SEO professionals saw their budgets increase this year. Another 56% of all SEO professionals surveyed expect to see their budgets increase by 2023, so our data shows little sign slowdown,” explains Loren Baker, founder and owner of Search Engine Journal. “Businesses relied on web searches during COVID. Now, they’re using SEO to build a strong foundation and maintain that momentum as they prepare for the challenges ahead.”
Other highlights from the report include:
Agency professionals relied more on network referrals to find new business than on in-house teams. B2C professionals are more likely to use revenue to measure success than B2B professionals. Top earning freelancers spend most of their time on technical SEO and strategy. 16% of C-Level/Directors reported that scalability was their biggest challenge. SEO professionals said that search intent will be their main focus in 2023.
“To be successful, SEO professionals need to carefully evaluate their past efforts, but they also need to be proactive and keep an eye on the opportunities and challenges ahead. The data in our report supports this,” said Baker .
