If you’re thinking about taking your course further by taking a short winter break class, the School of Journalism and New Media offers many options.

Whether you’re interested in learning more about integrated marketing communications, account planning, or college sports promotion, we’ve got you covered. You can also find IMC classes on internet marketing and public relations. Students can take a journalism writing winter while learning about Living in a Media World, or they can study the impact of social media on our society.

IMC 104: INTRODUCTION TO MARKETING COMMUNICATION

Introduces the core disciplines of IMC: advertising, sales promotion, public relations, direct marketing, database marketing, Internet marketing communication, and relationship marketing. RJ Morgan, Ph.D.

IMC 304: ACCOUNT PLANNING

It presents principles and practices of the account planning process to develop skills, knowledge, and strategies for use in different methods of influencing consumer behavior. Christina Sparks

IMC 306: INTERNET MARKETING COMMUNICATION

A detailed survey of online applications of marketing communication, for example, the website as a basic marketing platform, search engine optimization, digital promotions, email and social media marketing. Claire Nelson Hicks

IMC 584: COLLEGE SPORTS PROMOTION

This course will cover emerging topics or specialized content on integrated marketing communications. If you dream of a career in the sports industry, this class is your springboard to understanding the opportunities in college and professional sports taught by a sports industry executive with 35 years of experience representing athletes, professional leagues and corporate sponsors elite, such as Nike. , Gatorade and Academy Sports. You’ll meet virtually or in person with Ole Miss Athletics executives, agents for stars like Peyton Manning and Tiger Woods, college football experts like Brett McMurphy, social media leaders in these fields. IMC 391: PUBLIC RELATIONS

An introduction to the skills, theories, techniques, ethics, and goals of the public relations professions, emphasizing the role and importance of journalistic skills in public relations communications. This class will include an industry-focused digital text covering the latest trends and practices in public relations. The course package will also include a Mimic Public Relations simulation that provides hands-on experiences with professional public relations activities in a fictitious scenario where they assume the role of an account manager. IMC 404: INTEGRATED MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH

Theory and practice of qualitative and quantitative research applied to multiple marketing and communication challenges and tasks. Robert Magee, Ph.D.

IMC 491: PUBLIC RELATIONS TECHNIQUE

Practical analysis and development of specialized communication approaches to achieve specific objectives for a client. Application of public relations techniques inside and outside the classroom. The course includes a distance learning component so students can complete it from home. This is critical for graduating seniors who need internship experiences to add to their resumes, or maybe just an internship. Employers say the most successful job candidates out of college have had multiple internships. This is a great way to knock it out for two weeks. DAY 101: MEDIA, NEWS AND PUBLIC

Using the book “Living in a Media World,” students will participate in a small winter writing retreat. They will learn about the history of media, imagine its future, and be asked to complete writing assignments that explore how they influence and are influenced by our media world. Although the course is usually one semester long, students can complete it quickly during intersession. It is an introduction to various facets of communication, from mass media to marketing, advertising, public relations and social media. LaReeca Rucker

DAY 310: SOCIAL MEDIA IN SOCIETY

This class takes a critical approach to understanding the relationship between society and social media. The course will explore the development of social networks by placing them in wider social, political, historical and business contexts. We will examine how the emergence of social media technologies is discussed, the ethical and legal challenges surrounding these technologies, and how social media affects various aspects of our lives, including our social relationships, identity, privacy, and work.
