Link building used to be a core component of search engine optimization because this is the kind of thing that could end up making a website appear more legitimate to web crawlers. While this is the case, Google seems to be going in a slightly different direction when it comes to ranking a website in its SERP. It turns out that Google won’t give a lot of links the same level of credibility as it used to.
This comes from comments made by Google’s John Mueller in a recent podcast where he claimed that Google’s search algorithm is being altered to make links less useful from an SEO standpoint. This is similar to the former Google executive Matt Cutts claimed in 2014, and with all that said and now out of the way, it’s important to note that his words turned out to be fortuitous, as the links have seen a continuous decline in value since that time.
Google itself made a statement a couple of years ago firmly stating that links are no longer considered a primary factor in determining SERP ranking. This means that link building efforts will prove to be less fruitful in the future than would have been the case otherwise, and could shake the SEO industry to its core.
Most SEO specialists have placed a lot of value on link building, and they may have to invent new techniques and methods with all things considered. Google often makes changes to further adjust the quality of its search results, and people working in the industry usually have to keep up with these changes so they don’t get left behind.
Whether these changes will be drastic or gradual remains to be seen, but whatever the case, SEO professionals will need to change things up. It will be interesting to see what the consequences of these changes may be.
