Announcement from Head of Curation and Platforms, Coleen O’Lear, and Director of Product and Managing Editor, Kat Downs Mulder:

We’re excited to announce that Bryan Flaherty has been promoted to Director of Optimization and News Product. In this newly created leadership role, Bryan will oversee the SEO and News Products departments under Curation and Platforms, bringing synergy to two teams that work closely in the newsroom to optimize The Post’s journalism and increase adoption of new functions in our tools.

For the past nine months, Bryan has successfully led the newsroom’s search engine optimization efforts. He is a natural and versatile leader. As Task Editor for SEO, Bryan has demonstrated deep knowledge of the search and news product, collaborating with product managers and engineers to develop new templates and improve our optimization systems and workflows at scale. He has provided much-needed strategic vision and organization for important cross-company growth initiatives, such as establishing best practices for new formats, navigation and recirculation of articles and sites, and our tagging and taxonomy infrastructure . Bryan’s ability to operationalize ideas and teams is first-rate, as evidenced by the recent restructuring of what was once the operations team to better position The Post’s SEO and strategic outreach efforts.

Bryan joined The Post in 2011. He began his career at the Post in Sports, where he worked as a reporter, cross-platform editor and night digital editor, and joined Audience in 2019 as operations editor section Bryan also worked as Operations Editor at Local and Senior Operations Editor at Features.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Florida and a master’s degree in social science from the University of Chicago. A native of Northern Virginia, Bryan lives in Fairfax City with his wife, Meg, and their newborn daughter. In her now very limited free time (see: “newborn”), she enjoys hiking, experimenting in the kitchen, and working in her vegetable garden, which she cultivates year-round.

Please join us in congratulating Bryan on this well-deserved promotion. It starts on November 1.
