John Mueller of Google answered a question about Reddit about the probability of fixing just 10 pages out of a site’s 20,000 pages, how that might help it recover from updating useful content. The site owner said that only 10 pages were affected by that September useful content update and asked if the 10 pages might hurt the other 20,000 pages on the site.
The question that was summed up at the end was: “Can an HCU visit to 10 pages cause a site-wide classifier for 20,000 pages? Or can the May 7 reputation abuse update have an impact?”
John replied: “The issues most people post with core updates tend to be site-wide and not limited to a small subset of a site.” He added, “but I wouldn’t see those 10 pages as indicative of something you need to change in another 20,000 pages.”
He also added that the changes you saw in May are probably unrelated. He wrote: “The last core update was March/April, so the changes you would see from May onwards would be unrelated. Not sure how that will help you though.”
John went on to say that maybe what you learned from those 10 pages can be applied to the other 20,000 pages on the site. Here’s how he said it:
From the information you’ve posted, it’s also impossible to tell if you need to improve/fix something on those 20,000 pages, or if the world has just moved on (in terms of their interests, their expectations, and the relevance of your site ). You seem to have found things to make more “useful” in these 10 pages, maybe there is a pattern? This is something you need to work out: get to know your site, its content, and its users better. This is not an easy part of SEO, sometimes it is not even about SEO.
We know that the useful content update is all over the site, but we also know that with the March 2024 core update, Google wrote: “Our core ranking systems are primarily designed to work at the page level, using a variety of signals and systems to understand people’s usefulness. We have some signals all over the place that are taken into account as well.”
So with the useful content being swallowed up by the core update, there are some elements that are still all over the place.
Not sure how much this helps anyone, but thought I’d share it all.
