Popular trends in link building may not be the optimal way to improve a website’s position in search engine results. Learn what to avoid.

HOUSTON, TEXAS, UNITED STATES, October 13, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ — Link building is an integral part of website optimization. It is the process of acquiring links from other websites to improve a company’s ranking in search engines and visibility. In a way, it is similar to how company officials will network with other companies and businesses.

If a quality website links to another website, the recipient will benefit because search engines will also assume that it is also a quality website. However, the opposite is also true. If a website that Google considers untrustworthy links to a business, the search engine will also begin to scrutinize the company’s website more.

There are many ways to build links. It is important to choose the techniques that are most effective. Some common link building strategies include guest blogging, directory submission, and promotion on social networks. However, there are some popular methods that a business should avoid to ensure quality links.

Search engines divide links into two categories: normal (natural) links and unnatural links. “Unnatural” links are spam, while normal links are everything else. Google’s goal is to only use natural links for ranking purposes, so it updates its algorithm frequently to contain the rise of manipulative link building practices.

1. Avoid adding links to existing web pages

A link signal that Google can track is the addition of links to existing pages on a website. If the majority of sites that add links to existing pages are those that sell links, it will be easier for Google to detect them. After all, it is best to avoid adding more links to existing web pages to avoid being associated with this type of manipulative strategy.

2. Tread the line of link bait campaigns carefully

If done correctly, a link bait campaign could be useful. Two common types of link bait campaigns are Ego Bait and Resource Bait. An Ego Bait is when the website interviews a popular person to try and get links. On the other hand, Resource Bait is when the site publishes a comprehensive resource on a specific topic. Link baiting can result in hundreds of relevant links if done in a way that exposes the website to relevant sites, prospects and customers.

Of course, the opposite is true. Some of these campaigns may be “successful” because they get attention online, but they won’t earn any relevant links or business to the website. The easy-to-paste-link campaigns involved contests, humor and stunts. However, these are also the types that often fail.

3. Stay away from blog comments

Blog comments are an old and outdated strategy. Search engines created a link attribute called “nofollow” to counter this in 2005. There is no reason to spam comments on other websites. The only people who say this still works are the ones who offer comment spam services.

4. Don’t consider building profile links

When a forum site user posts or asks a question, there will be a link back to their profile. Often a link goes from your profile to your business or personal website. As a forewarning, this link will not count as a relevant link. Most forum sites prevent Google from crawling member profiles to prevent crawlers from considering these links as links for website ranking.

5. Be aware of the fine line of guest blogging

While guest blogging was a valid strategy, overuse and manipulative posts have rendered this tactic null and void in Google’s eyes. Now, Google has strict guidelines on what posts and guest blogs it considers spam and what it doesn’t. The search engine will take action against websites that post guest blogs and articles. Google has given a basic guideline on what it considers to be manipulative:

– Keyword Link Stuffing: Adding too many keyword rich links to a company in these guest articles
– Have the articles published on several websites
– Use or hire writers who do not know the topics
– Use similar content in these posts and guest articles or duplicate content from these articles found on the company’s website

The right link building strategies can help increase a website’s ranking on search results pages. However, like most trends, some methods will become obsolete. Before adopting a tactic and starting your campaign, it is best to thoroughly research the latest valid methods. As with the study of history, it is best to know what happened in the past to avoid making the same mistakes again.
