Google experienced a serious data leak of nearly 2500 documents, which revealed how it ranks websites and creates its algorithm.
Google is the world’s largest search engine optimization battleground, where all the industry leaders are fighting to be at the top of users’ search results. More than 2,500 critical internal documents from the tech giant containing information about how Google ranks websites and pages were recently leaked.
The controversy is not in the revelation of these secrets but in the revelation of the hypocrisy that Google has publicly expressed. A leaked document revealed that Google evaluates the number of clicks while assigning rankings to web pages, but has always denied doing so. The leak was first reported by Rand Fishkin and Mike King, who emailed Google to comment on the leaked information.
After several attempts, Google responded: “We caution against making inaccurate assumptions about your search based on out-of-context, out-of-date, or incomplete information. The information may be out of date, used strictly for educational purposes, or collected but not be used specifically for search.”
Google also clarified that it has always shared extensive information about how search works and the types of factors that weigh its systems while working to protect the integrity of results from manipulation. Google’s algorithm has always been difficult to crack, with only a few truly mastering it. However, recent documents and testimony filed in the US Department of Justice’s antitrust case have shed light on how Google ranks websites.
Google’s algorithms are a crucial foundation for many businesses to maintain their revenue as they solely depend on it for customer input. Google’s stance of ensuring a commitment to transparency paints a gray picture when compared to the details provided in the leaked documents.
