According to a new analysis, SEO job listings are down 37% year-over-year, with mid-level roles taking the hardest hit.
Also, there was a “resurgence” of remote SEO roles in the first quarter. But only 18% of SEO job listings provided a salary (or salary range), according to the SEOJobs.com report.
Why we care Just two years ago, we were in a period called the Great Resignation (a.k.a. the Great Reorganization), when job openings were plentiful and recruiting was a huge challenge for companies. Things have changed in 2024 and many newly unemployed people in our industry are struggling to get hired.
By the numbers. Breakdown of open positions by seniority, year by year:
Senior-level listings were up 3%. Intern/entry-level listings were up 1%. Mid-level listings were down 6%.
What they are saying A career in SEO may not feel as stable today as it has in recent years, but that doesn’t mean SEO is dead, rather SEO is evolving, according to report author Nick LeRoy:
“Companies want to ‘do more with less,’ which means hiring cheap junior resources and paying for proven experience/results through senior SEO. … I suspect the SEO industry is going to get a lot more turbulent before it gets better. However, there will always be job for an SEO who knows how to build a strategy, execute it and measure results effectively.
About the data. It is based on a year-on-year comparison of active job listings – 80,000 in total – published by around 4,700 companies.
