Google Search Volatility Increases May 22nd

Google Logo Electric Surge

After a few days of calm Google weather, we are now seeing increased volatility, fluctuations and SEO chatter around Google’s search ranking movement. It’s a little early, but I’m seeing an increase in SEOs noticing the ranking movement and many of the tools are showing an increase in volatility.

Therefore, there may be an update in the Google search ranking. The last Google update we covered was an unconfirmed Google update on May 16, but then the volatility calmed down over the past weekend for a few days. Now, it’s going up again from today (maybe yesterday). As a reminder, the March 2024 Core Update started on March 5th and ended on April 19th, 45 days later. Then we reported on rank fluctuations before April 25th (thinking it was still the core update) and also on May 3rd and also more rank volatility on May 9th and it hasn’t gone down.

Yes, Google is now rolling out AI Overviews and a new web filter, but I doubt that’s causing the volatility.

Google tracking tools

As you can see, most of these tools have gotten really hot and have shown a lot of volatility in Google rankings over the past week.

Here are some of the first SEO talks I found WebmasterWorld in the last day or so:

I’m starting to get traffic more in line with my business, the inquiries are better! Let’s see if it’s 2 days or if Google improves… My traffic is up 50% from last week. I thought I had a reasonable traffic day until I checked my logs and found that the Singapore Huawei Clouds bot had been 48.9% hits. I’ve tried every possible method to block this thing to no avail, which means thousands more hits over the next few days 🙁

Obviously, this also means that my actual traffic today is very low.

The big drop in the top three ranking terms continues…all in a very short period of time. I haven’t seen it in a while, but it doesn’t seem to make traffic any worse than usual, so it must be low volume terms that are dropping. I’m also seeing a lot of movement in competitive terms this week… I dropped from #1 to #2 and then #3 in some terms that I’ve been #1 for years. Then I moved up to #1 for other terms and moved up 30+ spots for others. Anyone else see it?

Are any of you not having something important going on right now?
