Has ChatGPT stealthily launched its search product?

OpenAI did not release its much-rumored ChatGPT search product last week. Or did he?

OpenAI has quietly released an early version of ChatGPT Search, as part of the GPT-4o roll out?

ChatGPT (the free 4o version) now tells you the sites it’s searching to provide its AI-generated responses and crawl and summarize web pages. And the websites he lists are not hallucinations.

Searched places When you ask a question that requires current information, ChatGPT will tell you that it’s “Searching the Web.” After this part is done after a few seconds, ChatGPT tells you “Searched X sites” and lists them.

Here is a screenshot:

OpenAI and Microsoft are partners. So, based on this screenshot, OpenAI is likely to use Recovery Augmented Generation (RAG) to rewrite the query and search bing.com to find websites.

But remember: OpenAI also released a web crawler, GPTBot, in August.

Side note: If you’ve blocked ChatGPT and other AI companies because of content theft issues, you might want to reconsider.

Answers and sources. ChatGPT’s response experience is much better (especially the featured link to sources) than what Google is doing now with their recently released AI overviews. In this screenshot, ChatGPT quotes 9to5Google and Search Engine Land several times:

browser I asked ChatGPT if it can search the web. I have no way of verifying whether this is fact or hallucination, but this is how ChatGPT responded:

“Yes, I can search the web with a tool called a browser. This allows me to find current information, recent events, or detailed answers that are not in my training data. If you need me to look for something specific, just tell me what are you looking for!”

Summary content. ChatGPT is tracking links and summarizing their information. That was shared on X by Dave Davies, Search Engine Land contributor and SMX Advanced speaker:

Search for ChatGPT. As a reminder, don’t expect ChatGPT Search to look anything like Google Search. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said that Google is boring and the world doesn’t need another Google.

Why we care OpenAI is right now in the underdog position that Google once held and seems to be slowly and intelligently developing a unique view of search combined with large language models (LLM). With negative sentiment around Google, OpenAI has a legitimate chance to make a run at Google, not by trying to emulate Google, but by changing the paradigm.
