Google search ranking volatility continued through May 16

Google Logo Torn Apart

I’ve continued to update the May 9 Google ranking volatility story, but it’s very unusual to see such intense volatility over such a long period in the Google Search rankings. This sort of continuous update in Google search rankings started on May 3rd, but then spiked on May 9th and hasn’t really gone down much since then.

Both SEO chatter in SEO communities and third-party tracking tools have been at a premium over the past week. I’m not sure if the Overviews AI or the new web filter is causing this, I highly doubt it. I just suspect ongoing ranking data updates and maybe some unconfirmed Google ranking changes we’re seeing.

As a reminder, the March 2024 Core Update started on March 5th and ended on April 19th, 45 days later. We then reported on rank fluctuations before April 25th (thinking it was still the core update) and also on May 3rd and also more rank volatility on May 9th and it hasn’t gone down.

Google tracking tools

As you can see, most of these tools have gotten really hot and have shown a lot of volatility in Google rankings over the past week.

And the talk has also heated up continuously over the past week. This is what some are saying to the WebmasterWorld forums and here in the comments of this site for the last day or so:

Drop in today! Another spike in traffic today for me from several different countries with a big increase in average pageviews per visitor and similar to Monday… Unusual. You see a 50% drop in the last 3 days. Anyone in the same boat? After some gains from the core update, we’re seeing a slight reversal with what happened on the 9th, which is a shame. I’m still trying to recover. Very bad situation, traffic drop, adsense drop… All down. Traffic looks even worse today. I have no idea if it’s because of these changes or what not. I don’t even care man.

This is just a sample of the comments about ranking fluctuations over the last day.
