Google is adding new AI-powered search features to Google Search and Google Search Labs, as well as rolling out AI Overviews to US searchers this week.
New AI-powered features include the ability to adjust general AI features, multi-step reasoning capabilities, planning capabilities, AI-organized search results, and a new Google Lens video question feature. New capabilities require users to register.
Tweaking the AI overview
Coming to Search Labs is the ability to adjust AI overviews to “simplify the language or break it down into more detail,” Liz Reid, head of Google Search, explained. Clicking “Simpler” will give users a more basic answer from the AI overview; clicking “Break It Down” will provide a much more detailed answer.
This functionality refines search results without requiring multiple searches in the same search session.

Multi-step reasoning ability
Google Search can now provide multi-step reasoning using Gemini’s step-by-step reasoning logic. “Instead of splitting your question into multiple searches, you can ask your most complex questions, with all the nuances and caveats you have in mind, all at once,” Reid wrote.
The example provided by Google below demonstrates how multi-step reasoning works. The example shows when you’re looking for a new yoga or pilates studio that’s popular in your community, conveniently located for your commute, and also offers a discount for new members. You can ask Google Search to “find the best yoga or pilates studios in Boston and show details about their introductory offers and walking time from Beacon Hill.”

Planning abilities
The scheduling capabilities feature gives you the ability to schedule what you need right in Google Search. This will give you options and the ability to co-create plans with others, show you links to recipes across the web, you can export those results and replace specific plan details with another option within different plans. Plus, it doesn’t just show you search results, it plans them with you along the way.
For example, you can search for “create a 3-day meal plan for a group that’s easy to prepare” and you’ll get a starting point with a wide range of recipes from around the web. You can change parts of the plan as you like and export them to Google Docs or Gmail.

Search results organized by AI
Google Search will use AI to group search results into specific categories. This will help you brainstorm ideas for your query, Hema Budaraju, Senior Product Manager, Search Generative Experience, Google told us. You’ll be given search results “categorized under unique AI-generated headings, with a wide range of perspectives and content types,” Google wrote.
Here’s how AI-organized search results will appear:

This functionality will roll out to dinner and recipes, followed by movies, music, books, hotels, shopping and more later this year directly on Google Search for US English results. Not available as a Google Search Labs activation feature.
Search for lenses with video
Lens search with video allows users to record a video and ask questions while recording; Google will respond based on the questions asked. “We’re able to take visual search to a whole new level, with the ability to ask questions with video,” said Reid.
This reminds me of Multisearch with images and Circle to search but with video.
Here’s how it will work when it goes live later this year.

Video search will soon be available to English Search Labs users in the US
