Google has read your feedback on the March 2024 Core Update and upcoming changes

Google Robot Reading Feedback Paper

Danny Sullivan, Google’s search link, said yesterday X who has read the community feedback related to the March 2024 core update and general feedback about search quality over the past few months. He said there are places where Google can do better, but it won’t happen overnight.

Sullivan wrote, “I’ve spent a great deal of time looking at comments over the last few months, digging into sites, writing thoughts, and talking to people internally.”

“I fully recognize that there are ‘small’ or ‘indie’ sites or whatever you want to call them that are diligently producing great content, but our systems don’t recognize it as well as they should,” he wrote. He said “there’s also a lot of really poor content that our systems are recognizing, and there’s also great content that’s doing really well, but the ones that are doing really well with great stuff tend not to talk about it on social media. ”

He said this is what Google can do best, specifically saying:

(1) Google can do better with that subset you mentioned above, namely the great content that isn’t well recognized.

(2) Can Google do a better job of helping itself move away from perhaps unhelpful things that others have learned? That can be done by providing “better guidance, maybe better reporting, and some other things I’m thinking we could try,” he wrote.

But that doesn’t happen overnight. He said, “I can’t do it overnight.” He further said that he can’t do it himself, adding that “it’s not what I’m responsible for either.” He’s a liaison, works “with other teams and suggests, encourages, recommends, but other teams have to move on,” so he doesn’t have the final say on anything.

Also, sometimes changes to the algorithm have trade-offs, he wrote, “and they also have to balance various trade-offs and other things.”

What Sullivan does, he said, and what he said he has been doing and will “continue to do,” he wrote, “is take the external feedback, channel it to various teams and provide advocacy and recommendations in ways that I think would help all around.” This includes perhaps an automated stock viewer.

Also, Danny can’t win:

Isn’t it really a road map? Was that a question that I found useful to answer, as a way to share some of my own thoughts and how am I sharing that with our team? As for how many followers someone has, well, I hope you don’t have to have a lot of followers just to get a…
