OpenAI is expected to integrate real-time data into ChatGPT

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman dispelled rumors that a new search engine would be announced on Monday, May 13. The recent agreements have increased the expectation that OpenAI will announce the integration of real-time content from English, Spanish and French publications on ChatGPT. , with links to the original sources.

OpenAI search is not happening

Many competing search engines have tried and failed to challenge Google as the leading search engine. Currently, a new wave of generative AI hybrid search engines are trying to knock Google off the top spot with very little success.

Sam Altman has said that creating a search engine to compete with Google is not a viable approach. He suggested that technological disruption was the way to replace Google by completely changing the search paradigm. Speculation that Altman will announce a me-too search engine on Monday never made sense given his recent history of dismissing the concept as a non-starter.

So perhaps it’s no surprise that he recently ended the speculation by explicitly saying that he won’t be announcing any search engines on Monday.

“No gpt-5, it’s not a search engine, but we’ve been working hard on some new things that we think people will love! It seems like magic to me.”

“New stuff” can be iterative improvement

What is announced will most likely be iterative, meaning that it improves upon ChatGPT but does not replace it. This fits with how Altman recently expressed his approach with ChatGPT.

He remarked:

“And it’s a bit of a shock to ship a product that you’re embarrassed about, but it’s so much better than the alternative. And in this particular case, where I think we really owe it to society to iterative deployment.

There could totally be things in the future that would change where we think iterative deployment isn’t such a good strategy, but it seems to be the best current approach that we have and I think we’ve gained a lot from doing that and … hopefully the greater world has also gained something.”

Iteratively improving ChatGPT is Sam Altman’s preference, and recent hints point to what those changes might be.

Recent offers contain clues

OpenAI has been making deals with news outlets and publishers of user-generated content since December 2023. Mainstream media have reported that these deals involve licensing content for training large language models. But they overlooked a key detail we reported last month, which is that these offerings give OpenAI access to real-time information that they said will be used to attribute that real-time data in the form of links

This means that ChatGPT users will have the ability to access real-time news and use that information creatively within ChatGPT.

Dotdash Meredith offer

Dotdash Meredith (DDM) is the publisher of top brand publications including Better Homes & Gardens, FOOD & WINE, InStyle, Investopedia and People magazine. The deal that was announced goes far beyond using the content as training data. The agreement is explicitly about displaying Dotdash Meredith’s own content on ChatGPT.

The ad said:

“As part of the agreement, OpenAI will display content and links attributed to DDM in relevant ChatGPT responses. …This agreement is a testament to the great work OpenAI is doing on both fronts to partner with creators and publishers and ensure a healthy Internet for the future.

More than 200 million Americans each month rely on our content to help them make decisions, solve problems, find inspiration and live fuller lives. This partnership delivers the best, most relevant content straight to the heart of ChatGPT.”

A statement from OpenAI lends credence to speculation that OpenAI intends to directly display licensed third-party content as part of ChatGPT responses.

OpenAI explained:

“We are excited to partner with Dotdash Meredith to bring their trusted brands to ChatGPT and explore new approaches to advance the publishing and marketing industries.”

One thing DDM also gets out of this deal is that OpenAI will improve DDM’s internal ad targeting to show more focused contextual advertising.

Le Monde and Prisa media offers

In March 2024 OpenAI announced a deal with two global media companies, Le Monde and Prisa Media. Le Monde is a French news publication and Prisa Media is a Spanish-language multimedia company. The interesting aspect of these two offerings is that it gives OpenAI access to real-time data in French and Spanish.

Prisa Media is a global Spanish-language media company based in Madrid, Spain, which consists of magazines, newspapers, podcasts, radio stations and television networks. Its range extends from Spain to America. American media companies include publications in the United States, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico and Panama. That’s a massive amount of real-time information on top of a massive audience of millions.

OpenAI explicitly announced that the purpose of this agreement was to bring this content directly to ChatGPT users.

The ad explained:

“We’re constantly making improvements to ChatGPT and supporting the news industry’s essential role in delivering real-time, authoritative information to users. … Our partnerships will enable ChatGPT users to engage with high-quality content de Le Monde and Prisa Media in recent events at ChatGPT, and their content will also contribute to the training of our models”.

This agreement is not just about training data. It’s all about bringing current event data to ChatGPT users.

The announcement was elaborated in more detail:

“… our goal is to enable ChatGPT users around the world to connect with the news in new interactive and insightful ways.”

As noted in our April 30 article revealing that OpenAI will display links to ChatGPT, OpenAI intends to display third-party content with links to such content.

OpenAI commented on the purpose of the collaboration between Le Monde and Prisa Media:

“Over the coming months, ChatGPT users will be able to interact with relevant news content from these publishers through select summaries with attribution and enhanced links to the original articles, giving users the ability to access additional information or related articles from their news sites”.

There are additional deals with other groups such as The Financial Times who also stress that this deal will result in a new ChatGPT feature that will allow users to interact with news and current events in real time.

There are plenty of hints that Monday’s announcement will mean that ChatGPT users will be able to interact with content about current events. This is in line with the terms of recent agreements with media organizations. There may be other features announced as well, but this part is something that many clues point to.
