Over the past week, Statcounter has reported to many that Google lost significant market share in the US and worldwide from March to April 2024. It turns out that this was some sort of reporting error, and Statcounter has updated the data the weekend.
People like it Glenn Gabe i Danny Goodwin he immediately said the data looked wrong and they were right. Goodwin published a story Sunday about that too.
Statcounter originally and erroneously showed that Google’s US search market share fell to 77.52% in April, from 86.94% in March and 88.8% in April 2023. It is now back up to 86.58% (March was 86.94%) – here is the revised chart:
Statcounter incorrectly showed that Microsoft Bing grew to 13.05% in April from 8.04% in March. It now shows Bing at 8.24%. And Statcounter incorrectly showed Yahoo growing to 7.3%, up from 2.48% in March. It now shows Yahoo at 2.59%.
Global share reports. they were not as drastic, but they were also updated.

I should note that Similarweb also pointed out that the data appeared to be incorrect, and that their data shows that Google is still incredibly dominant:
Based on our data (search engine website category, US, March 2024), it looks like we’re not there yet: pic.twitter.com/RBUJp4ZLeb

To think that Google would lose so much market share in just one month seemed a little too much for many of us. I know many of you were hoping these numbers were correct, but they weren’t. I waited to report on this until Statcounter responded to these concerns…
