Google says it has taken action on some SEO parasites in a recent update

Google Parasite

Google’s Gary Illyes said on stage at the SERP conference last week that Google has taken steps to combat what some of us call parasitic SEO in the most recent update to Google’s algorithm. He was quoted as saying, “We’ve already done things against SEO Parasite; the recent update is proof of that.”

Nikola Minkov posted this to X saying: “More from Gary Illyes, we’ve already done stuff against Parasite #SEO – the recent update is proof.”

Here is that post:

What I think Gary is referring to, if he’s quoted correctly, is the March 2024 spam update that already targeted escalated content and expired domain abuse and will soon target the site reputation abuse, also known as parasitic SEO.

Last December, Danny Sullivan said that Google took action on some SEO parasites and that there were more. We saw a few examples of sites that did receive their recent update from Google, but we were waiting and hoping more were hit when the Site Reputation Abuse Policy applies.

So I guess we’ll see, but Gary is quoted as saying that the last update addressed some of these issues with search quality.

Judith Lewis interviewed Gary Illyes at the SERP Conf last Friday.

Discussion in the forum a X.
