A student and researcher who leaks Android’s hidden features discovered a setting deep within Android’s root files that allows Google Gemini directly from Google Search in a way that resembles Apple iOS, and raised questions about why this is there and whether it could be connected to a general network. The launch of AI in research is rumored to happen in May 2024.
Gemini: What SEO Could Be Up Against
There are only rumors that some sort of AI search will be rolled out. But if Google does implement Gemini access as a standard feature, the following gives you an idea of what the search community should expect.
Gemini is Google’s most powerful AI model containing advanced training, technology and features that in many ways go far beyond existing models.
For example, Gemini is the first AI model to be natively trained to be multimodal. Multimodal means the ability to work with images, text, video and audio and extract knowledge from each of the different forms of support. All previous AI models were trained to be multimodal with separate components and then joined the separate parts. According to Google, the old way of training for multimodality didn’t work well for complex reasoning tasks. Gemini, however, is pre-trained with multimodality that allows it to have complex reasoning abilities that surpass those of all previous models.
Another example of Gemini’s advanced capabilities is the unprecedented scaling of the context window. A context window is the amount of data that a language model can consider simultaneously to make a decision. The context window is a measure of the power of the language model. Context windows are measured in “tokens” which represent the smallest unit of information.

ChatGPT has a maximum context window of 32k GPT-4 Turbo has a context window of 128k Gemini 1.5 pro has a context window of one million tiles.
To put this context window into perspective, Gemini’s context window allows you to process the entire text of all three Lord of the Rings books or ten hours of video and ask it any question about it. Compared tothe best 128k OpenAI context window is capable of considering the 198-page Robinson Crusoe book or roughly 1600 tweets.
Google’s internal research has shown that its advanced technologies allow context windows of up to 10 million tiles.
The leaked functionality resembles the iOS implementation
What was discovered is that Android contains a way to access Gemini AI directly from the search bar of the Google app in the same way that it is available on Apple mobile devices.
The official instructions for the Apple device reflect the functionality that the researcher discovered hidden in Android.
That’s how the Access to iOS Gemini is described:
“On iPhones, you can chat with Gemini in the Google app. With a tap of the Gemini tab, unlock a whole new way to learn, create images, and get help while you’re on the go. Interact with text, voice, images and your camera to get help in new ways.”
The researcher who leaked the Gemini functionality in Google search discovered it hidden in Android. Enabling this feature resulted in a toggle appearing in the Google search bar that makes it easy for users to swipe to directly access Gemini AI functionality in exactly the same way as on iOS.
Enabling this feature requires rooting an Android phone, which means accessing the operating system at the most fundamental file level.
According to the leaker, one of the requirements for the switch is that Gemini is already enabled as a mobile assistant. An app called GMS Flags must also be installed to get the ability to turn the Google app features on and off.
The requirements are:

Android 12+ rooted devices
Google App latest beta version from Play Store or Apkmirror
GMS Flags app has been installed with root permission granted. (GitHub)
Gemini should now be available to you in your Google app.”

Is Google ready to announce the official release of SGE?
There have been rumors that Google will announce the official launch of Google Search Generative Experience at the May 2024 I/O conference, where Google regularly announces new features in search (among other announcements).
Eli Schwartz recently published on LinkedIn about the rumored launch of SGE:
“This date does not come from Google PR; however, as of last week, this is the current internally anticipated release date. Of course, the schedule could still change, given that there are still 53 days to go. Several release dates have been missed over the past year.
…Also, it is important to explain what exactly “launch” means.
Right now, the only way you can see SGE, unless you’re in the beta experiment, is if you’ve opted in to the labs.
The launch means they’ll show SGE to people who haven’t subscribed, but the scale of that could vary widely.”
It’s not known if this hidden toggle is a placeholder for a future version of the Google search app, or if it’s something that enables the deployment of SGE on future data.
However, this hidden toggle offers a possible clue for those curious about how Google might implement an AI-based interface for search, and whether this toggle is somehow a plug-in to that feature.
