Facebook rolls out full-screen video player with key updates

Facebook is rolling out an updated video player that offers a consistent design for all video lengths, including reels, longer videos, and live content, in full screen.

This updated video player, which bears a striking resemblance to TikTok, will initially launch on iOS and Android devices in the US and Canada, with a global rollout scheduled for the coming months.

Why we care. The full-screen video player, with its enhanced features, is built to grab people’s attention and increase engagement with your content.

What is changing? Now, whenever you tap on a video in the Facebook app, it will always open in full screen and vertically oriented, as shown in the gif below:

While videos will automatically appear vertically, you’ll notice a new full screen option on most horizontal videos that will let you switch to landscape view for better viewing.

Previously, depending on the length of the video or where you were watching, you may have seen horizontal videos or videos playing in a Feed-like player.

For example, you might get suggested Reels that give you quick makeup tips or longer DIY home improvement video tutorials, curated by experienced homeowners. The ability to easily jump to the part you are most interested in using the slider at the bottom of the player.

What Facebook says. Facebook said in a statement:

“Outside of the new player, you’ll also now see more relevant video recommendations, regardless of length, in Feed and the Video tab. And while Facebook remains the home of all types of video, we’ll be showing even more reels to meet growing demand of this format”. “These updates also mean more types of creators will have more opportunities to reach additional audiences they may not have reached before.”
