Google is beta testing an AI chat feature on the Developer Pages subdomain that is capable of answering questions about anything found on Developer Pages, including SEO, structured data, and classification documentation.
The beta feature is supposed to be available on all developer pages to answer questions about the page a site visitor is on or any other developer documentation web page.
Developer profile required
The new feature, called Sidebar Chat, is only available on desktop devices, not mobile. It is available in many regions, but requires users to register for a developer profile. Signing up requires signing in to a Google Account to create a developer profile, but you don’t need to confirm your email address.
Google’s documentation explains that the developer profile allows you to customize chat panel responses. The developer profile itself is played with unlockable achievements and badges that can be earned.
Sidebar questions
The AI chat answers questions about anything in the documentation on the developer pages, but it can go a little off the rails. I asked a question about link building and one of the answers was questionable.
The question was asked:
What are five popular ways to build links?
The only answer, no doubt sketchy, was:
“Guest Post:
Write high-quality guest posts for other websites in your industry or niche.
Be sure to include a link to your website in the author bio.”
He also advised creating infographics, but did not suggest requiring backlinks.

I then asked the sidebar chat for the top 5 tips for ranking at the top of Google search results.
Google’s new AI chat offered the following suggestions and an explanation for each:
Create high-quality, relevant content Build high-quality backlinks Optimize your website for technical SEO Promote your content Monitor your results and make adjustments
Limited answers
The chat is limited to answering questions related to the documentation on the developer pages. You cannot answer questions that are outside this scope.
Because AI chat is in beta, meaning it’s in a testing phase, it may incorrectly say it can’t answer a question or provide questionable answers. Google asks users to provide feedback to improve the service.
Google’s documentation says:
“If you find errors with valid questions, please consider rewording your question. If the chat incorrectly indicates that it can’t answer your question, you can report this issue by clicking the Send feedback icon at the top of the chat panel lateral”.
