This is just a friendly reminder that tomorrow, Tuesday, March 12, 2024, Google will replace First Input Delay (FID) with Interaction to Next Paint (INP) as a Core Web Vital metric. This has nothing to do with Google March 2024 Core. update that is currently being rolled out at the same time, but I’m sure this will further confuse SEOs since “core” is the name of both of these changes.
This Core Web Vital metric change from FID to INP will have little to no impact on your search rankings. I will say again that this change will have almost zero impact on your site’s search ranking.
Here is the timeline of this change:
Google has been talking about this since early 2022, so it will be a long time coming. Google told us the official date of March 12th a few months ago. More information about INP can be found here and how to optimize it can be found here.
There are reports in Search Console for INP, so check them out if you haven’t already. Last July, Google sent warnings about INP issues through Search Console.
Just a reminder, fixing INP issues will not result in visibility changes on Google Search. Note that page experience is not a system, but a good page experience is part of the overall core ranking system. “Good statistics from the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console or third-party Core Web Vitals reports do not guarantee a good ranking,” Splitt wrote.
Again, don’t equate Google Core Updates with a Google Core Vital Update – they’re two different things. Basic updates have a massive impact on a site’s ranking, basic web vitals have almost no impact on a site’s ranking. Basic updates take into account the content and overall quality of a site. Basic web vitals look at how fast and easy a web page is to load.
