Danny Sullivan, Google’s search liaison, reiterated that the search company “generally tries to avoid” overlapping algorithm updates. This is after Google released both the March 2024 Core Update and the March 2024 Spam Update on the same day.
While the spam update should take two weeks to roll out, the core update can take up to four weeks.
Google has said this before, in 2021 Sullivan said they were trying not to overlap updates, and he repeated it in 2022 saying, “We’ve worked really hard to keep updates separate from each other, or as little overlap as possible, to help the creators understand it more.”
I asked Danny Sullivan, “What happened to working hard not to overlap updates? This March core and spam update has numerous updates released in the same time period, let alone manual actions and mail policy updates trash”.
Sullivan responded, “We generally try to avoid this, but we had both the core update and the spam update ready, and eventually we’ll push updates that we think will improve the quality of search results. Manual actions don’t they are. an update. The new spam policies are not an algorithmic update. So these are not ‘updates’ that ‘overlap’ the core and spam updates.”

I just saw this. We’ve worked really hard to keep updates separate from each other, or as little overlap as possible, to help developers understand more. So no, it’s not a fluke, we’re supposed to have a core update, but we said to wait until the useful content update has been rolled out…

It’s inevitable that some updates will overlap, as we can’t hold back things that we think will help improve search. But I think we’ve done more than ever to communicate more about the updates we make, when they happen, and what they involve, including our page. https://t.co/gElfbRUpl2

We had an update and Google had to do something big, so this is Google’s big.
Discussion in the forum a X.
