Google to clarify use of AI to generate content for SEO purposes

Danny Sullivan, Google’s Search Link, said last week that the search company will issue additional clarification on the acceptable or unacceptable use of AI to generate content for SEO purposes. In short, Google has already said that you can’t use AI (or other means) to generate content to manipulate ranking in search results.

The specific language of Google above he wroteas I discussed earlier, it is:

Using automation, including AI, to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating search results ranking is a violation of our spam policies.

If that isn’t clear enough to you, Sullivan said X, “it’s something we thought was pretty clear since our post last year.” But he added: “People who read this and somehow interpret it as a ‘free pass’ should have a serious rethink. I’m sure you’ll also see us looking at ways to make it even clearer.”

Here’s that tweet:

“Using automation, including artificial intelligence, to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating search ranking is a violation of our spam policies” is something we thought which was pretty clear from our post last year: https://t.co/w4LGtiJRXI.

Now, maybe the problem is the word “primary”, I mean, if you make content for both users and search engines, I’ll say it’s primarily for users and of course secondary for search engines.

yes, the word “primary” here may be the problem.

This came up again because of this WIRED piece called Confessions of an AI Clickbait Kingpin – It’s worth reading.
