I’m seeing the first signs of a possible Google Search ranking algorithm update starting yesterday, February 28th, and continuing through today, February 29th. Chatter started to pick up yesterday among the SEO community and some of the third party ranking tracking tools are showing increased volatility.
Again, Google hasn’t confirmed any updates in over 16 weeks, but we’ve had plenty of unconfirmed updates to Google’s search ranking algorithm since then, including a weird one last weekend.
Mind you, we’re all patiently waiting for the next big Google update that Google has been promising since November.
Maybe I should have called this the Leap Day Google Update?
So what are we seeing related to this possible unconfirmed Google Search update?

The SEO chat has just started and most of the chatter I’m seeing comes from the comments area here (I’ll cut through the noise for you by inserting the relevant comments here) and some of WebmasterWorld:
We had a week (again) of incredible conversions; today, it just dropped like a rock… here we are. Anyone else experiencing low traffic today? Today is awful. After 2 reasonable days Yes. This week has been horrible since Monday. I’ve hit the lowest since September. Google traffic was better than usual on Sunday and Monday, usually traffic is almost dead from Saturday to Monday. Today, however, things are bad. Google traffic so far is significantly lower than usual on a Tuesday. This back and forth is making me very nervous. Sunday I also noticed traffic going up, and today when I woke up it was -20% and now -7%. They just move a foot up or down and the traffic suffers the same here…Sunday and Monday very heavy traffic. Tuesday again by a cliff. US traffic is -22% as of 4:30 p.m. The question is, when traffic is high, is it converting? Yesterday was a miserable day for me, as I expected. -43% compared to Sunday and Monday. Sistrix shows a 5.1% drop for my website in its visibility index today. A look at my direct competitors shows that they have been hit even harder. Other websites I monitor have also dropped a lot.
Maybe what happened over the past weekend backfired in some way?
