How SEOs use link data in Google Search Console

Google Space Loops Links

How is link data used in Google Search Console? That’s what Google’s John Mueller asked earlier this month, and he got a nice list of uses for link data in the Search Console.

Personally, I rarely use it, but when I was checking Search Console, I noticed that my link count went up and ended up being specific to a specific post (a digest post). So I guess someone was trying to screw me over here (comment below if that was you):

Here is the post where Joan asked this:

On that note, I’m curious how you use link data in Search Console? With no ominous background, I was recently going through a bunch of sites and wondered what I should tell people looking there. Surely you all have more experience there!

Laurent Bourrelly answered listing these use cases:

Old and new sites Website type Placement of links to source code No or very little keyword optimized Anchor Small and large text (Majestic Citation Flow) IPs History and speed of acquisition Topics (similar and related) Majestic TTF must match topic Nofollow and dofollow Majority from home country plus US and miscellaneous Most native language plus English and miscellaneous

Andy Beard he wrote:

Trackbacks Technorati/Blogcatalog Google Alerts (please don’t kill it too) People who comment with a link Free Majestic

Now that’s old school!

Tony McCreath he wrote“It can help figure out why Google crawls some strange URLs.”

Terry Van Horne added“I only look at it when I’m cleaning up a mess some other SEO has made. For me, GSC links are the links that matter. I realize it’s a ‘snapshot’, so I merge it with Majestic. I look closely at all the ones I think are spam. to the GSC because they are more useful for future testing.”

dean said“Internal link data is most useful to me and mine. Being able to understand what types of pages (subfolders) are getting the most attention or not.”

Rutledge Daugette he wrote, “If we’re not supposed to spend time debunking, sometimes it’s not the most useful tool. There are a lot of spam/scraper sites out there.” He shared this screenshot:
