Google says you decide what old content is useful or not

Old Man Writing Google Logo

The topic of removing, updating or blocking old content from Google is not new and we have covered it countless times. I saw Google’s John Mueller comment on it again, this time Redditsaying, it’s up to you to decide which of your old content is useful and useful; it’s not Google’s responsibility to decide.

John wrote, “There is no upper/lower word count limit or goal” so it’s not about word count and he said it before. “So what is helpful and useful is what you decide,” John wrote.

Then he took off his Google hat (but is it ever off?) and wrote:

Personally, I find that single news archives can be useful, but I have no idea what content you’re looking at. You can also take a hybrid approach and move them to an archive section, make the section non-index, and allow people to still find the content using internal search (which also lets you see in metrics if the content, in set, is still considered useful by your regular users).

Added:

Something can be useful even if only a few people read it. Imagine if Wikipedia deleted all the articles that were in the bottom percentile of views. (And similarly, something can be useless even if a lot of people read it).

Personally, I like to keep my old content available and haven’t really updated much over the years. It’s like a museum of SEO news. 🙂

Here are the previous times we wrote about this topic (at least the ones I want to link here):
