Now we know: Google is the unnamed AI company Reddit struck a content licensing deal with, Reuters reported
Why we care Reddit was already facing backlash among SEOs because Google seems to favor the platform in the SERP feature of discussions and forums. Reddit even surpasses the original content sources in some cases.
Now, the question some people will naturally ask: Did Reddit get all that valuable visibility in Google’s super-valuable search results because of, or in part because of, this deal? Or Reddit’s strong presence in Google search results is an attempted fix after several stories about how searchers add searches with “reddit.” (Or could both of these things be partially true?)
the deal Google reportedly pays Reddit $6 million a year to train its AI models (eg, Gemini). However, neither Reddit nor Google have officially commented on the deal.
On February 16, Bloomberg (subscribe required) first reported that Reddit had struck a deal with “a large AI company.”
make them pay Reddit made it clear last April that they wanted AI companies (eg Google, Microsoft, OpenAI) to pay to use their content. Well, now it looks like Google is doing just that. Reddit founder and CEO Steve Huffman told the New York Times (subscription required):
“Reddit’s corpus of data is really valuable. But we shouldn’t be giving away all that value to some of the biggest companies in the world for free.”
Rankings jump. Meanwhile, like Glenn Gabe published in XThe number of URLs ranking in Google grew from 22 million last May to 41.1 million today, according to data from Semrush:
“That’s a massive jump… meaning they’ve not only improved rankings, but the sheer number of ranking pages.”
Here’s Gabe’s full post:
22 to 41.1 million URLs -> OK, so Google has a deal with Reddit to train its AI on Reddit content. We also know that the “hidden gems” piece came out in the fall of 2023 and Reddit (and other forums) went wild. But with the deal, does Google have a reddit fire hose? i mean it’s reddit… pic.twitter.com/24uVJydTQb
