Google’s Gary Illyes said that the HTML structure of your web pages doesn’t matter much for rankings. He said this to latest podcast Search Off The Recordsaying, “I know some people like to think that HTML structure is very important to rankings, but it really doesn’t matter that much.”
Gary went on to explain that if all sites on the Internet had the same structure, it would make for “a very boring Internet.”
He added that “using headings and a good title element and having paragraphs, that’s all great.” “But other than that, I would think it’s pretty pointless to think about how the page is structured…or how the HTML is structured, providing a working template for any website that seems like an oxymoron to me.”
In 2018, John Mueller said that a clear content structure is helpful, but it won’t hurt you if you don’t have a clear structure. It made it sound like it might be helpful for your users to have a clear structure, but for ranking purposes, it won’t matter anyway. Google also said that semantic HTML is not a signal of quality. Google has said that sometimes SEOs go overboard with H1 elements and also moving them won’t matter for ranking.
