Google is in the process of reworking its popular Google SEO Starter Guidewhich he initially released in 2010 and then updated in 2017. The starter guide is about 8,500 words right now, but it will be less than half that when the revised SEO starter guide comes out.
On the Search Off The Record podcast released yesterday Google’s Lizzi Sassman said that they cut a lot of repetitive and redundant information from the current initial SEO guide and the new one will be cut in half.
The new SEO Getting Started Guide should be out soon, if not sooner. The current one appears to be over 8,500 words, and the new one was just over 3,000 words, according to Lizzi.
Lizzi said:
So we cut at least half of it because there’s a lot of duplication where we’re explaining what the title is and we like the best practices for improving titles and descriptions where we have a full guide that we’ve now improved from SEO Starter. The guide was originally written. So it was like a one-stop shop, but now we have more extensive stuff on all these topics. So I think part of it is like, why do we have to have it in two places?
Google’s Gary Illyes said he believes the SEO Starter Guide, which currently ranks highly on Google, will see its ranking drop on Google because it has less content.
John Mueller later added LinkedIn:
It’s always tempting to keep adding to a full document; more words is better, right? well no Having a massive body of work doesn’t make it easy for people to just jump into the world of search engine optimization. So we’ve been working on revamping it a bit, making it much shorter and more suitable for modern websites. Reader feedback has been very helpful in all of this (we review everything submitted in the documentation). I don’t know when it will be ready, sometimes the last bits take longer :-). Stay tuned.
While Google said word count is not a ranking factor, removing words that might match it could be a problem, Gary hinted. “That’s exactly what I’m saying. Of course. No. But I mean, if you think about it, like, if you don’t have those words on the page anymore, then how would you classify them,” Gary wrote. when John and Lizzi question him about the word count.
