Competitive research

With the competitive research tool, you can learn about what your competition is doing, and better yet, what’s working for them. For example, you can see your website’s traffic by country, see how much traffic is organic versus paid, see its number of backlinks, see top keywords for both organic and paid, and see how your performance compares to your main competitors.

Link building

The link builder tool helps you identify link opportunities. To set it up, you’ll need to enter your URL, your target keywords, and your top competitors. With this, Semrush will provide a list of link opportunities and the ability to add those you are interested in building links with to an ongoing lead list for easy follow-up.

Keep in mind that while Semrush will help you streamline the process of finding link building opportunities, you still have to manually contact each site in order to actually get links. So while it does some work for you, it doesn’t do all the heavy lifting that goes into link building.

On-page and technical SEO

Last but not least, the on-page SEO tool and technique helps you better design your web pages for search. This includes a site audit where Semrush crawls the pages of your site and provides information such as website health, errors, site performance and basic website vitals. It also has an on-page SEO checker, an SEO content template to help you create content that ranks, a log file analyzer, and listing management.

While the information provided by Semrush can be insightful, it isn’t necessarily actionable if you don’t have technical SEO knowledge or experience. That said, a site audit is a great way to quickly identify issues with your site. However, it does not necessarily provide useful information for users to make meaningful changes.

Content marketing

Semrush’s content marketing features give users the ability to search for keywords and get related content ideas. This can be a useful tool for businesses that know what keywords they want to target, but are struggling to create relevant content that will help their site be found in search. It also has an SEO writing assistant to help users create content on their chosen topic, as well as a template to help keep users on track while writing.

These features aren’t particularly useful for those with content marketing and writing experience. However, it could be a useful tool for those who don’t.

Market research

Semrush offers a variety of different market research tools. This includes competitive analysis, market analysis, paid advertising and public relations monitoring. With these tools, businesses can learn about their competition, such as the keywords they rank for and buy ads for, how much traffic their site gets, and their social media presence and mentions. These insights can be useful, but they don’t necessarily help a company directly improve their SEO.

Advertising

The advertising component provides a number of features to help businesses understand what their competitors are doing and how their ads are performing. It has tools for both paid search (eg Google Ads) and paid social advertising (eg Facebook Ads). While performance statistics are convenient, it’s not like every ad platform doesn’t offer comprehensive analytics and performance statistics. However, where it excels is its ability to help users discover the best keywords to target their ads.

Social media

Semrush connects with most major social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Google Business Profile. Its social media features are useful for businesses that passively use social media marketing. However, it is likely not too suitable for businesses that rely heavily on social media marketing.
