A recent post about Reddit asked about the impact of having a website where most of the text is inside images. Would Google be able to read the text, what is the SEO impact and would the text rank in the search results?
This is a topic we haven’t covered in a long time, so I thought I’d cover it again.
Bottom line, if you want to do SEO right, make sure the text is on the page and not inside an image. There are even some old-fashioned techniques, with new ways, to make sure the text looks like it could be in a graphic.
Worst case, you can use high tags on images so that Google can understand the image and the text in that image. Google used to allow text image replacement techniques as well.
Google’s John Mueller responded to this Reddit thread and said: “You could also be pragmatic: Is it the same text you already have in text form (eg your company name and address), or is really something substantial that would be out of place if the pictures weren’t there?”
In short, if this is important text that is unique to this page, you might want it to be actual text and not an image.
