There has been a lot of chatter in the SEO community over the past few days regarding the extreme volatility of ranking in Google Search results. Google’s tracking tools have also picked up the volatility over the past day or so. There’s no way Google released a confirmed update this week, but hey, Google search results take on a life of their own.
It’s strange to see such drastic changes in Google search results in a week when you know for sure that Google didn’t release any algorithmic changes. But it also seems like the weekends have been hot for Google Search ranking changes.
We saw something similar with Google ranking volatility before Christmas and now we’re seeing it with the timing of New Year’s Eve.
I hinted at seeing the first signs of this update in my Friday video, but like I said, I wanted to wait for more signs before covering it.
There is quite a bit of chatter about possible reversals of Google’s latest update.
It’s so hot I thought I’d cover it on a Saturday night and not wait for “business hours”.
Google tracking tools
Let’s first see what Google Search’s automated tracking tools show:
So, as you can see, the tools show extreme volatility in ranking.

Here’s some of the chatter that really started a few days ago, but I suspect it took a while for most SEOs to catch on during the slow period between Christmas and New Years.
I saw chatter about it on social media, WebmasterWorld/a> and the comment area of ββthis site.
Here are some of those comments:
Google Some Update π¨
There is a VERY HIGH chance that an algorithm update is in the works, with tremors since just before Christmas and the last 24 hours seeing SERIOUS movement according to my ongoing SVT.
Are you seeing movement on your sites?
β Charles Floate π (@Charles_SEO) December 28, 2023 Serious fluctuations in my main niche at the moment. Previous HCU pages declassified, others crash and just fluctuate a lot. I think with all the volatility and the Googlers gone on vacation, it’s clear they are running a planned slow algorithm update or machine learning/AI. is totally in control. What are you trying to achieve? I’m guessing revenue is the first priority since Google’s ad growth has been weak compared to Bing for two quarters in a row. But even a return to common sense will not undo the damage Google has inflicted on its brand. Google search is totally broken! Shuffle positions like every second. US traffic is up 50%. I am seeing positive signs. I think they are flipping the switch. I am seeing some healing today. Small but real. Perpetual loss of top ranking terms continues… 2-3 per day. Traffic to my home page dropped 72% yesterday. I wonder if blocking the extended google bot is part of the problem? It wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect punitive action from Google to deny it access… A few articles have dropped out of the SERPs again, it’s been a month and a half since I last saw it.
I’m also seeing insane volatility in my KWs, persistent since mid-December and not slowing down in any way.
Today, Google dance. Algoroo has been on fire for the last couple of days and aligns perfectly with our traffic pattern. A nice gain followed by a huge drop lol!
Googlers should take a day off in the new year and stop tweaking their algos.
I see the same thing.. Before Nov 25th 14.2 in G search console. Then until 18-20 and 50% lost traffic. Last days again. There is not as much traffic as before despite going up again. A year ago it was 18-20,
Have you noticed anything important in the last few days?
