9 ways to stay on top of the latest SEO trends

In the fast-paced age of readily available information, staying on top of your game is crucial. And, if SEO is your game, there are plenty of ways to stay on top of news, trends, tips and tricks to stay informed and informed.

From free visual-based guides and videos to YouTube and other training-specific platforms such as Google Skillshop, to case studies, trial and error, and explanations of what works in the real world (and what doesn’t), a wealth of free knowledge shapes our industry. It also keeps major brands at the forefront of the digital ecosystem.

Here are my top nine ways to stay on top of transformative news, changes, and ideas that will keep your SEO sharp and your knowledge at its peak throughout your career.

1. Read SEO posts and blogs

It seems obvious and is probably the most common (you’re reading one right now), but its value can be unmatched.

Using the same platforms we research and solve problems with every day (search engines), we can quickly find articles on diverse topics, helping us understand complex concepts and new ideas. And we can do it anytime from anywhere with an internet connection.

We can also subscribe to the newsletters of many of these publications, so the news literally comes to us.

Besides Search Engine Land, there are other publications worth your time Round table of search engines and branded blogs, such as Semrush, Ahrefs i Moz.

One of the top rated online sources for details related to Google Search is Google Search Central blog (formerly Google Webmaster Central Blog).

Subscribing to blogs and using Feedly or similar curation feeds can help you easily access and organize your reading resources for daily updates.

2. Web seminars and YouTube

You can learn pretty much anything on YouTube. The world’s most popular video search engine is a wealth of life-changing knowledge and guidance.

This includes SEO and digital marketing knowledge and guidance.

Whether it’s learning about a specific and complex aspect of SEO, or delving into industry news or new tactics, YouTube offers a wealth of user-generated content that is priceless to millions every day.

Some of the most valuable videos on YouTube (at least about digital marketing and other specific areas of expertise) are pre-recorded webinars.

These webinars are typically hosted by brands and/or thought leaders in their respective niches and are recorded when they first air, then posted to YouTube for on-demand consumption. Use them to your advantage.

3. Podcasts

The growth of podcasts over the past decade has been incredible.

What once seemed limited to obscure interviews on eclectic or controversial topics has evolved into educational content, covering topics from peanut allergies to murder mysteries and everything in between, including SEO.

Some solid podcasts focused on SEO and digital marketing include:

Do a little research and find one or two that you get the most value (and entertainment) from, and keep up with news and trends when it’s convenient for you.

4. Follow thought leaders

One of the most powerful entries on this list, SEO thought leaders help shape the digital marketing industry and what we’re constantly learning and strategizing about. Most of these people also share their thoughts and reflections on a daily basis.

You can see evidence of this anywhere on social media: X i LinkedIn are some of the most powerful platforms for real-time SEO tips and tricks.

There are so many high-octane players in the SEO community. Anyone who doesn’t follow at least a handful of these thought leaders is simply doing themselves a disservice.

Some of my favorite people who focus on SEO on a daily basis are:

Official Googlers are also often helpful:

These thought leaders can keep you updated and inspire you to do revolutionary things. You can usually follow them in more places than just X.

Many will become industry friends if you interact with them online and whenever you see them at conferences, too.

Get the daily search newsletter marketers trust.

5. Online Groups and Communities

Online forums and communities were once the lifeblood of SEO communication and troubleshooting, and they still have a huge impact today.

Classic spaces like WebmasterWorld still drives discussion and participation, as well as sites like Webmaster Stack Exchangethe SEO forumand the long Moz Community.

The advent of social media and other industry communication platforms has filled the list of troubleshooting forums, but you can still find almost any answer you need either way.

6. Conferences

Conferences offer a unique opportunity to listen, learn and, if you are interested, speak or present.

Typically a multi-day affair with many of the hottest and most insightful subject matter experts in SEO (and other marketing channels), these opportunities aren’t free, but their value is priceless.

You can definitely find a reputable one relatively close to where you live and work or attend a conference remotely (and usually at a reduced price) depending on the attendance options and price of each conference.

Some of the best conferences are:

Conferences are investments your company should always make. They are great for connecting with top professionals and provide an authentic way to meet your online SEO connections in person.

Tools help us learn to be faster and more efficient, but they also shape the SEO industry.

Most digital marketing SaaS tools are valuable for:

Identify issues unique to customers’ digital presence. Simplification of tasks. Discovering new ways to identify and remedy our day to day.

Their content teams also consistently produce rock-solid content for us to use to our advantage.

8. Use the search and its features

We can use every tool available and read hundreds of articles a week, but if we’re not working on real-time research, our knowledge will always be limited.

We must use all the tools and tricks to make our job easier, but using, testing and exploring Google Search and all other relevant search engines will forever remain critical.

Google is always trying new things (so don’t fall in love with the changes you see), but there’s only one way to know what you think is the best search experience.

Test, experiment, hypothesize, then test some more.

9. Do work!

There is really only one way to become a good SEO. And that is being an SEO.

Part of being an SEO is keeping up with news, trends and innovations.

Learning and growing in the trenches is the most effective and unique way to earn your stripes.

The changes I have seen up to this point in 13 years have been incredible and sometimes even daunting.

And it’s all just begun.

do the work Stay tuned.

And enjoy the ride.
