Google’s Gary Illyes explained how Google Search may or may not treat special characters in Google Search. He explained this at the latest Google SEO office hours at 4:10 p.m.
Gary was asked, “How does Google handle special characters like the superscript e in search results.”
For example, a Latin letter E with an acute like this:
Gary said “if these characters aren’t showing up correctly in search results, it’s likely caused by a discrepancy between what Google’s algorithms detected as the character encoding for your page versus what you intended to use “.
So in this case Gary said “you should specify the encoding in your HTML using the meta element and its chars attribute”. This is “especially” important “if you use funky characters in your HTML,” he added.
“If the character encoding is not specified, Google will try to detect it, but getting it right is actually quite a task and very difficult in most cases,” he explained.
So if Google gets it wrong, try explicitly specifying the character encoding in your HTML.
