Google posted an indexing issue with Google Search, saying it is investigating reports of delays in indexing content. Google said this issue “affects a small number of sites” and that they are “working to identify the root cause.”
What Google wrote. Google published“Google is investigating reports of delayed indexing in Google Search that is affecting a small number of sites. We are working to identify the root cause. The next update will be in 12 hours.”
Google also posted these responses to X:
It started early this morning. Reports of these indexing issues started coming in around 1:30am ET on Thursday, December 21st. I originally posted about this on the Round table of search engines, several hours before Google confirmed the problem. You can see that some of the complaints came in as early as 1:30am ET and continued to come even as I write this story.
Who is affected Initial thoughts were that only sites in India and specific regions were affected, but that’s not exactly correct. Others thought it had to do with sites that serve plain HTML pages and offer an AMP workaround.
The places I write, here and the search engine roundtable don’t seem to be affected. The Wall Street Journal, the NY Times, the Washington Post and other major publications don’t seem to be affected either.
Google said it only “affects a small number of sites.” Google will update us when it finds the “root cause” of the problem. But I don’t expect Google to share which sites were affected and which were not.
now what If you’re affected, there’s not much you can do right now but wait it out. Google is investigating the issue and hopefully will fix it sooner rather than later. Google said it will provide an update in the next 12 hours, but hopefully we’ll see an update sooner.
Why we care If you’re seeing problems indexing your content and therefore traffic issues to your site from Google Search, this may be the reason. Again, this particular topic is new, as of this morning. If you’ve had problems indexing and ranking over the past few days or months, it’s likely more of a problem with one of the Google Search algorithm updates and Google thinking your site isn’t worth ranking and index at this time.
