Google’s Gary Illyes explained when he thinks it makes sense to use a hierarchical versus flat structure for your website. In short, he said, larger sites could benefit from a hierarchical structure if they want to encourage Google to crawl sections of the site more quickly.
Gary said at Google SEO office hours starting December 2023 at Mark 1:35, “for a large site, it’s probably better to have a hierarchical structure.” Why that? He explained, “this will allow you to do funky things in a single section and also allow search engines to treat different sections differently.” He said that when “especially when it comes to drag,” that’s something you might want to keep in mind.
“For example, having a news section for news content and archives for old content would allow search engines to crawl the news faster than the other directory. If you put everything in one directory, that’s not really possible” , he said.
Here is the video embedded when he said this:
It’s not the first time he’s said it, he said it in September 2022.
Discussion in the forum a X.
