The Google Reviews Update is over: What you need to know

Google just rolled out the latest announced review system update. Future updates to the review system will no longer be announced because the algorithms that drive the review system will be updated regularly and continuously.

Review system

Google’s review system is a system used as part of a group of algorithms that together produce search results.

The review system comes into effect by ranking content related to review and search queries.

The purpose of the review system is to rank content in the first place. Google has published guidelines to help publishers understand what type of content the review system is trying to classify.

It’s important to note that the guide is not a list of ranking factors, but rather general advice on what types of content Google is trying to rank for so publishers can get a better idea.

Google’s general guidelines for the review system state:

“The review system aims to better reward high-quality reviews, content that provides insightful analysis and original research, and is written by experts or enthusiasts who know the subject well.”

The launch of the Google review system is complete

The patch system update was announced on November 8, 2023 and finished rolling out on December 7, 2023 at 9:21 AM PT.

Google has updated its search status dashboard with the following notation:

“The launch was completed on December 7, 2023.”

That announcement was accompanied by a tweet from your Google Search Central account:

“The release of the November review update is now complete.”

End of review update preceded by rating drops

Interestingly, there were several reports of ranking drops in Facebook SEO groups in the days leading up to the end of the review system rollout.

There are usually rank drops and rises every day. However, it becomes noticeable when there is an increase in reports in various Facebook SEO groups, especially those that are popular with cutting-edge SEO practices.

Next What to expect

Google hasn’t discussed what it means when it says the review system will be improved on a constant and regular basis. It may be a daily process where data is ingested from new web pages and the rankings are adjusted. We don’t know and probably won’t help anyone become a better SEO by knowing the details.

Best practice is to familiarize yourself with Google’s review system guidelines and self-assess against those guidelines if you should find that your site is possibly affected by the review system.
