The check is in the mail for some New Yorkers

Additional tax breaks are being made available to New Yorkers and low-income families.

The state Department of Taxation and Finance will soon send direct financial assistance to 1.75 million residents who receive the Empire State Child Credit and/or the Earned Income Credit on their tax returns 2021 state. Checks are due by the end of October.

Eligible New Yorkers don’t have to do anything. Checks will be sent automatically.

Officials are reminding residents who have recently moved, they will want to update their address with the Department of Taxation and Finance to avoid any delays in receiving their additional child and employment tax payment checks of New York to which they are entitled.

Residents can check their eligibility here.

Residents can create an account at DTF website and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the required fields to save the updated address information.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D-Buffalo) and legislative leaders on September 8 announced that $475 in tax credits for low-income New Yorkers were available with an average payment of $270 per eligible recipient.

In making the announcement, the governor said, “This program will put money back into the pockets of nearly two million New York families struggling to make ends meet in the face of the pandemic, inflation and other rising costs.”

Earlier this year, $2.2 billion in tax relief was announced through a new Homeowners Tax Credit.

Another tax break came on the gas and diesel tax holiday across the state. This tax suspension came into effect in June and will remain until the end of the year.
