To kick off Gamescom this week, Geoff Keighley hosted his Opening Night Live event, a two-hour gauntlet of video game announcements and trailers, including many not made in the US. Here is a by no means exhaustive list of some of the more interesting games; if you want, watch the full video. here. We also covered some of the show’s biggest news in other articles, including Hideo Kojima’s new Spotify podcast, the Return to Monkey Island release dateSony’s new Edge controller and even a Pokemon concept car.
Everywhere
Everywhere — a game that will have either great or terrible search engine optimization — kicked off the program. In the report, Build a Rocket Boy developers, including former Grand Theft Auto game designer Leslie Benzies, showed off an open-world game where players can create their own stories and build their own universe.
Dune: Wake up
In addition to a strategy game and a Fortnite crossover, the world of Dune is also getting an open-world survival MMO. Called Dune: Awakening and made by the same studio that makes Spice Wars RTS, the short clip features what appears to be an older Paul Atreides reciting the famous “Fear is the mental killer” speech as he’s about to go to ride in a car sand worm Beta registrations are available here but there’s still no word on beta dates, release dates, or if the game will finally allow Paul to turn into a sandworm.
The Hogwarts Legacy
Hogwarts Legacy, the persistently delayed Harry Potter prequel game, has a new trailer. In it, a Slytherin and a Hufflepuff explore the mystery behind the Unforgivable Curses in the hope that they can be used to save lives. The trailers show students fighting zombies and what looks like a choice system, much like Telltale’s The Walking Dead series.
Under the Waves
Under the Wavesdeveloped by Parallel Studios, is a narrative single-player game published by the studio Star Wars: Eclipse quantum dream. Evoking the mysterious deep sea exploration vibes of ABZÛ, Soma and Subnautica, Under the Waves focuses on the pain, isolation and alien wasteland of the open waters.
Goat Simulator 3
The sun has come out, the language has come out. Developers Coffee Stain Studios injected some much-needed levity into Opening Night Live with the gameplay trailer of Goat Simulator 3. Blea, baa and ragdoll around the world taking you to all sorts of goat-flavored mischief. Out November 17 on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, Goat Simulator 3 supports online or local four-player co-op.
High on Life
High on Life, the “Rick and Morty game without Rick or Morty” showcased a new boss fight while testing the limits of how much the general public can handle a talking gun. The consensus? Not much. Imagine dying repeatedly during a difficult boss fight and having Morty’s voice actor Justin Roiland repeat the same dialogue at you ad naseum until you win. No thankyou.

break moonthe newest game from Subnautica developers Unknown Worlds Entertainment, might be the most interesting game of the show. According to their website, the game is a real-time, turn-based tabletop strategy game with single-player, competitive multiplayer, co-op multiplayer, and roguelike elements. It’s a miniatures-based game that evokes physical tabletop strategy games like Warhammer, allowing you to customize your units without the painstaking process of physically painting tiny statues until you need your fingers. Moonbreaker will enter early access on September 29th on Steam.

Dead Island 2
It doesn’t exactly evoke any of the emotion it evoked in hers reveal trailer for the predecessorDead Island 2 ended Opening Night Live with a bang reveal i game trailer. Dead Island 2 has been firmly lodged in development hell since 2014, changing studio hands multiple times. It takes place in a zombie-infested LA known as “Hell-A” (get it?) and the game website describes it as “the most intense, visceral and gory first-person experience possible”. Both trailers certainly play this gore up with all kinds of wet, wet noises as rotting body parts explode across the screen. Dirty. The game will also be the first to feature Amazon’s new Alexa Voice Control technology. Dead Island 2 launches, for real this time, on February 3rd on Xbox, PlayStation and PC.
