Brave Search features an AI answer engine

Brave Search introduced a new AI answer engine called Answer with AI. It will produce “synthesized” AI-generated responses from multiple sources for any query.

What is Answer with AI? AI Answer, as the name suggests, uses AI to generate answers to queries directly in the search results. This bold new search feature appears above organic search results.

The format varies slightly, depending on the type of query. At the bottom, Brave includes a section called Context, under which Brave links to the sources it used to generate its response. Based on a small number of searches I did, Brave tends to pull most of its answers from top-level pages.

It follows Brave’s AI recap feature, introduced last year.

How Answer with AI works. When a user enters a query, Brave uses large language models (LLMs), primarily Mixtral 8x7B and Mistral 7B, data from their search results, and RAG (retrieval augmented generation) to generate answers almost instantly.

When users see Respond with AI. For informational queries such as questions, the AI response will be the default experience. For other query types (browsing, commercial, transactional), AI response will be optional – click the AI Response button.

But it’s not perfect. I thought it was the same person/entity as the former Major League Baseball player who shares my name.

Size Brave Search. Brave Search indexes 20 billion web pages, has over 1 billion location-based schemes, and serves:

27 million queries per day. 10 billion queries per year.

Respond with AI availability. It is available on all platforms (desktop and mobile) for all searches in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Searching in other languages may return answers in English.

What Brave is saying about AI responses. The big concern among SEOs and content creators is how AI responses to search results could affect the amount of traffic that search engines send to websites. Brave addressed this concern, telling Search Engine Land:

“Brave, as a browser and search engine, is aware of these challenges. Accordingly, we will monitor and quantify the impact of AI-generated content on site visits and ultimately address disruptions that could cause the traffic”.
