Google Search Console has released a security update on managing user controls and permissions where you can better manage ownership tokens. Ownership tokens are used when people verify your site in Search Console, Merchant Center, and other Google products, and sometimes people who had access to your profiles in the past should no longer have access.
This updater makes it easier to manage that access and removes those tokens and permissions when they’re no longer needed.

We are rolling out more improvements to Managing Search Console users and permissions, incorporating capabilities related to the management of unused property tokens. Tokens are codes used for website ownership verification in Search Console, Merchant Center and other Google products. We have seen cases where these were accidentally left behind after the owners moved. In February 2023, we launched improvements to the user and permission management report. The latest changes will improve accuracy and reflect the actual state of unused ownership tokens.
how it looks In the user interface and permissions, under “unused property files” you’ll see a screen like this where you can click “remove” to remove access to these property tokens:
How it works. Here are the steps to manage these ownership tokens:
Visit the User interface and permissions
Click “Unused Ownership Tokens” Choose the tokens you want to remove and click “Remove” (see screenshot below) Click “Verify Removal” to get the ownership token update not used
Why we care It’s always a good idea to make sure that the right people have access to your Search Console data and properties, and more importantly, that the wrong people don’t. As Google’s Nir Kalush wrote, “The update released today allows you to verify the removal of the unused verification token so that removed owners cannot regain access to the property.”
So check your tabs and remove the ones you shouldn’t have access to.
