While I highly doubt Google pushed an algorithmic change over Memorial Day, there was a significant increase in chatter in the SEO community, and third-party Google Search tracking tools show volatility. Yes, traffic can be weird and lower on Memorial Day, I get that, but there seems to be more traffic than normal.<\/p>\n

So, was there an update to the Google Search rankings over Memorial Day weekend? Let me share what I’m seeing, but before I do that.<\/p>\n

Just a reminder that we saw Google ranking volatility around May 22nd, May 16th, May 9th, May 3rd, and April 25th. Previously, the March 2024 Core Update started on March 5 and ended on April 19, 45 days later. It’s been a busy month.<\/p>\n

I started watching the talk WebmasterWorld<\/a> on Sunday May 26 and the talk continued until yesterday. Here are some of the things that have been said on the forums:<\/p>\n

Wow, I’m seeing a 70% drop in traffic to my site’s home page this weekend. Now a drop is normal on holiday weekends, but certainly not 70%…. What’s up with that? Very poor weekend for my overall site at 60% yesterday and so far today after 20 hours at 40%. I hope tomorrow is just as low.<\/p>\n

The UK Hotels site finished yesterday after a very slow start and today has been very busy as expected with food and live music.<\/p>\n

What a strange weekend. Saturday Google traffic collapsed, Sunday a sharp increase, today so far 1 hour high traffic, an hour like nothing, this has been happening since 6am. I give up trying to understand it. For me too, a bit down on the weekend. Down, down and down. No one knows why or wherefore. Little by little I am accepting that this topic has no future. :(Oh wow, there’s life after Google. My overnight traffic is +140%. Back, almost, to where I was. I think some new articles went viral, but Google was -20 %.So none of this Traffic increase was sent by them.After months and weeks of solid drop, now I see an increase.<\/p>\n

It’s a bank holiday weekend in the UK so I went out for a few beers last night and was surprised. Several pubs were already closed and the normally very busy pubs were all absolutely dead… Did all the supposed 20 million car journeys happen last night?<\/p>\n

I thought Google would leave it alone on Memorial Day, but it seems there’s been a shuffle in my niche now anyway. In fact, it was very quiet for a few days with virtually no change in the standings. But it starts again. He’s just sick. I don’t understand why the rankings are shuffled so much day to day. I have read the theories here and they seem correct to me. It could be an A\/B test. Who knows. Anyone feeling a difference this weekend?<\/p>\n

Glenn Gabe also spotted changes and wrote: “Well, add 5\/26 to the list. I’m seeing some confirmed rankings increases on the sites I have access to. And these are sites also affected by the March core update” .<\/p>\n

So we’ve seen crazy volatility after the March Core Update release. For example, the 5\/3 move was huge and we saw several sites fully recover from the core March update.
