In doing so, I ran into a “too many redirects” issue and had to work with my hosting provider to resolve it. Turns out they fixed this redirect error, but in doing so, they changed my “home” and “siteurl” values in my wp_options table from ” to ” (my site is a WordPress site). This caused my canonical urls to change on all my pages and redirected my site’s www urls to non-www urls. My site used to redirect non-www URLs to www URLs.

John said this wouldn’t cause a big change in ranking. John Mueller wrote:

This won’t cause problems with search visibility, rankings and indexing – when the canonical URL changes, it just changes. You may see a small glitch, but it’s back to normal very quickly. At most, you would see this in any analysis you use, if you separate the use of www/non-www. The only time it would cause larger changes is if you change the canonical domains to another domain and the domains have a different configuration (eg country-TLD, removed from search, different crawl settings, etc.), with a www/no www. change everything is within the same domain and you should be fine.

John Mueller added that the change could be a coincidence with Google’s March 2024 core update or perhaps some other reason. John added:

If you see a drop in ranking or indexing, it’s due to other reasons. Also, if you’re focusing on the last 5 days, you’ll probably see fluctuations just from normal fluctuations – things always go up and down a little bit, there’s a lot of things related to search. And if you’re considering the core update, keep in mind that it’s not marked as complete yet.

John said this earlier, that going from www to non-www won’t change much, and using www or not www makes no difference to Google Search.

Discussion in the forum a Reddit.

[ad_2]

Source link

Google’s John Mueller said that if your website is www.domain.com and then you decide to canonicalize it as non-www, so it goes to domain.com from www.domain.com, that change wouldn’t have a big impact on your rankings.
